Helensburgh Challenger Group is a charity dedicated to making sailing accessible to people with disabilities.  The group is based at Helensburgh Sailing Club, and has full access to wheelchair friendly clubhouse, including accessible toilets and showers.  A hoist, and trained operator, is available if required to board the dinghy.

The charity aims to support and develop adaptive sailing by promoting participation, building skills, and boosting confidence.  It offers guidance and encouragement to help individuals gain the ability to sail a very stable boat, whether it be independently or with a competent buddy.   Furthermore, the group aims to provide access to enjoyment, pleasure and the thrill of being on the water.

Sailing sessions run from May to October, taking place on a Saturday morning and with an initial training session for helper volunteers. The 2026 dates are:

  • May: 2nd, 16th, and 30th
  • June: 27th
  • August: 15th and 29th
  • September: 12th and 26th
  • October: 10th (and an end-of-season meeting will also take place)

Sessions are on Saturdays between 10 am and 1 pm. We can cope with all abilities, from complete novice. To get in touch to find out more please contact the club office who will put you in touch with the HCG committee.

The group has 4 Challenger trimaran dinghies, all in good condition and waterproof clothing for new sailors. Not sure what a Challenger is? See below:

What is a Challenger?

A small, single-seater trimaran dinghy that is safe for any disabled person. It's unsinkable, self bailing, won’t capsize and is very stable. Use it for racing, training or cruising. Launch from the beach, slipway, pontoon or mooring. And because it can be fitted with electronic controls and personalised seating, it enables disabled people from 12 to 92 years young, female and male to all enjoy the thrills and freedom of sailing.
