_______________________________________________________________ Brief History The Club was formed in 1951 to encourage amateur boat sailing in the waters adjacent to Helensburgh, is a properly constituted sailing club with membership open to the general public. The first clubhouse was on Helensburgh Pier. It is competently and prudently managed by an elected committee of responsible enthusiasts. Its active membership, drawn from a fifty mile radius of Helensburgh, is growing and it has a thriving Junior Sail Training Group and Challenger (Disabled) Fleet. It is an RYA approved training establishment and is Scotland’s first Volvo Championship Club.
Why replace the clubhouse? The 1967-2008 clubhouse was a flat roofed timber construction and was augmented by two Portakabins. It had become too small, obsolete in design and reached the end of its useful life. Despite regular maintenance the structure had become nail sick, the roof leaked badly, the changing rooms and toilets needed major refurbishment and the electrical system required major up-rating. |
What we now have
.. a pitched tiled roof building with a footprint of 450 sq m with adequate changing, clubroom and catering facilities that will accommodate the dinghy and keelboat sailors, both male and female.
These facilities are designed for flexibility to handle the large numbers of sailors attending the local, regional and national regattas held at the club. The new clubhouse also provides for the safe storage for equipment and rescue boats and provide accommodation for the rapidly growing youth and disabled group sections together with their training. In addition it covers the needs of an expanding general membership. The design includes the facility to develop the loft space should membership levels rise in the future. Oh ... and it flooded from time to time!
